The Marrakech Medina and Bab Ghmat: An Authentic Neighbourhood

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, the Marrakech medina is far more than a backdrop for tourists — it's a living urban fabric where every neighbourhood has its own identity. Riad Davina sits in one of the most authentic: Bab Ghmat.

What is a Moroccan medina?

The word "medina" refers to the historic, usually walled, part of the city found in most Moroccan towns. Marrakech's medina, founded in the 11th century, is organised into a dense network of lanes (the "derbs") serving inward-facing houses built around an interior courtyard rather than the street. The souks, historically organised by trade guild, take up a large part of its urban fabric.

Bab Ghmat, a lively local neighbourhood

Riad Davina is located on Derb Hmida Lajaaj, in the Booskri area, better known as Bab Ghmat. Unlike the busier lanes near Jemaa el-Fna, Bab Ghmat keeps the authentic rhythm of everyday Marrakchi life: local shopkeepers, children playing, neighbours chatting in doorways. It's a genuine change of scenery, far from the tourist clichés.

Living in a riad: the outside/inside contrast

It's one of the most striking experiences of a riad stay: a discreet, almost anonymous façade hides an interior designed for calm and serenity. At Riad Davina, once through the door, you find a traditional courtyard with its zellige fountain, orange tree and small pool — a genuine haven of peace just steps from the buzz of the medina.

Finding your way around the medina

From Bab Ghmat, it's about 1.2 km (15-20 minutes on foot) to Jemaa el-Fna square, and 1 km to the Bahia Palace and the souks. The neighbourhood is well served by petit taxis (10 minutes max to the square), and a car park guarded day and night is located 500 m away — since the medina is pedestrian-only, no car can reach the riad's door.

Why stay here rather than on the outskirts

Choosing a neighbourhood like Bab Ghmat means choosing authenticity without giving up comfort: the riad's amenities (air conditioning, private bathroom, generous breakfast, 24/7 front desk) rival those of new-town hotels, with the added, unique experience of real medina life.
